The extension of the Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging for research conducted by the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft in the area of “Food”, provides a usable area of 1,200 m², accommodating a hygiene- and GMP-compliant (GMP = Good Manufacturing Practice) food pilot plant, as well as lab, storage and office spaces.
Located in a green meadow landscape at the edge of Freising, the new building is in context with the plastered façades and tiled roofs of the existing two-storey buildings.The extension is connected to these buildings on two levels via a small entrance foyer. The food pilot plant on the ground floor is designed as a large, flexible and divisible space, while the labs and offices on the floor above have a bipartite structure.
Features such as the proportion of the building, number of storeys, roof shape and materiality were all specified by a land-use plan. As far as the externally used materials were concerned, a deviation was however agreed with the client and the Urban Design Committee. Instead of plastering, the façade was finished with sand-coloured, large-format ceramic panels, and instead of brick-red roof tiles, a matching sand-coloured roof covering was selected, as an expression of an independent architectural language. The plain shape and homogeneous colour design document a new stage in the development of the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging. A stance against the usual design of the outskirts of towns with commercial and industrial buildings of a similar type is furthermore formulated.
The uniformity in the material design of the roof and walls relates to the research conducted inside the institute: on the subjects of packaging, product development and process engineering in areas including food, ingredients, functional film materials and product safety.
