HypoVereinsbank – Conversion and Canteen Extension Am Tucherpark, Munich

The dining hall in the office building of the Bayerische HypoVereinsbank AG, situated next to the English Garden in Munich, was originally built by the architect Sep Ruf in the 1970s. The provision of additional seating for about 120 people demanded a sensitive design strategy in view of the high architectural quality of the existing building fabric. External space was turned into internal space and a former U-shaped courtyard area in front of the cafeteria is now occupied by a new steel-glass extension. Openness, transparency and discreteness were primary objectives of the façade and roof design utilising point-supported insulating glass.

In order to enhance the lucency and lightness of the envelope, glass was also used for the secondary structure supporting the roof and external horizontal glass elements assume wind bracing and shading functions. The material concept of the extension follows the existing material design: maple wood wall panelling and natural stone floors.
