The urban planning concept of the new building of the Faculty of Business and Engineering at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt is based on the specifications of a master plan. A two-story cube delimits the future "city square" at an important street intersection in the vicinity of former barracks.
The new building with its courtyard-like forecourt marks the beginning of a new university campus and continuation of the existing campus on Ignaz-Schön-Strasse. Building entrances are located on the future campus axis. The internal organization is characterized by the functional requirements of a seminar and laboratory building, as well as the need for spaces that create a communicative and inspiring atmosphere for students and lecturers.
The design concept reflects the typology of an open atrium floor plan with a green inner courtyard. The entrance foyer forms the center of a ring-shaped floor plan with seminar rooms enclosing the courtyard. Open staircases lead to the U-shaped floor plan of the upper floor, with offices for the deanery and professors on one side and labs for experimental work on the other.
A lively interplay of sand-colored shell limestone slabs, reflecting glass surfaces and the linear structure of anthracite-colored metal profiles and lamellae characterize the monolithic building structure – an impressive statement at an important urban planning location on the campus axis.
