An existing refurbished nursing home operated by the Workers’ Welfare (AWO – Arbeiterwohlfahrt) Association in Hohenmölsen has been extended by a three-storey building, with a new single-storey structure connecting the two structures. The original ground-floor social wing was demolished and rebuilt on the same spot.
The extension provides bedrooms for 80 nursing home residents, divided into three care categories, with a total of 20 double rooms, 32 single and eight wheelchair-friendly single rooms. Rooms are oriented towards the park and corridors are arranged around a central atrium with greenery. Each corridor opens up to a common area with a sunny balcony.
The social wing is a functional link, containing a central entrance hall as well as the food service area of the old and new parts of the nursing home. This popular meeting place for residents and visitors accommodates all the essential central facilities including a dining room with kitchen, a multi-purpose room and administrative areas.
Large ribbon windows looking out onto the yard, loggias and terraces connect inside to outside and create different building zones. White and wine-red plastered surfaces alternate with horizontal wooden slats and timber windows with coloured awnings, structuring the exterior façade and giving the buildings a homely character. This is continued inside, where wood and colour accents create a pleasant atmosphere contributing to the well-being of the residents.
